Moving to Florida
Once you've settled into your new Florida home, one of the first administrative tasks is transferring your driver's license and vehicle registration. Florida law gives you 30 days from establishing residency — here's exactly how to do it.
You have 30 days after establishing Florida residency to transfer your out-of-state driver's license. You're considered a resident when you get a job, enroll kids in school, or register to vote in Florida.
Florida driver's licenses are issued through the county Tax Collector's office, not the DHSMV directly. Find your nearest office at flhsmv.gov. Appointments recommended.
You'll need proof of identity (passport or birth certificate), Social Security card or document, two proofs of Florida residential address (utility bill, bank statement, lease), and your current out-of-state license.
A basic vision screening is done on-site. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them.
A Florida driver's license costs $48 for an 8-year license. Your license will arrive by mail within 7–10 days; you get a temporary paper license to use in the meantime.
You must also register your vehicle in Florida within 10 days of employment, enrolling kids in school, or becoming a resident. Bring your out-of-state title, proof of Florida insurance, and payment for registration fees (varies by vehicle weight and county).
💡 Pro Tip: REAL ID
Florida offers a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a star). This is required for domestic air travel as of May 2025. Make sure to request a REAL ID when you apply — it requires the same documents listed above.
